In the history of Jōdo Shinshū, there is a long held tradition that people prepare a meal for a Buddhist gathering using the rice and vegetables they have brought and enjoy the meal together (they are vegetarian meals following the Buddhist precepts). This meal has been called Otoki.
At the Higashi Honganji, visitors can enjoy the traditional Otoki meal. It is our wish that the Otoki meals will serve as a reminder of how fortunate we are to be able to receive meals every day, the fundamental aspect of our life that we might sometimes take for granted. We also wish that the meals will give you an opportunity to encounter and appreciate the Buddhist teachings as well.
